At the dedication of the School of Family Life in September 1998, President Boyd K. Packer gave the charge to make The Family: A Proclamation to the World and its principles central to all of the School’s activities. He stated, “I know of no greater service that his, the Lord’s university, can give to His church than through this School of Family Life to turn the hearts of young fathers and young mothers to their children.”
Since Elder Packer’s admonition, the School of Family Life has identified three major goals: (a) strengthen marriages worldwide, (b) make the world a better place for children, parents, and individual family members, and (c) help societies and governments be more friendly to marriages and families. One of the missions of the School is to educate the minds and spirits of university students concerning successful principles of marriage, parenting, and optimal human development in an environment that is spiritually strengthening.
Thus, the School of Family Life developed a minor so that students across the university could enroll in courses that include content that would help them in their future families. Faculty in the School hope it can be a minor for all majors.
