FAQ About New Majors

Frequently Asked Questions About the New MFHD and HFL Majors (3/30/04)

  1. If I am already an MFHD or HFL (formerly FL & HE) major do I have to fulfill the new major requirements?

NO, students already in the program are not required to change to the new program. The catalog they used when they began the major is the catalog they use to finish.

  2. If I am already an MFHD major can I count the current MFHD classes that are changing numbers and/or switching to the HFL program as part of the Elective Requirement?

YES, the students must follow the course requirements and class options of the year they declared their major. The classes that count towards MFHD the year the major was declared, will remain an option regardless of class name or number change. Students who switch to the new program which starts Fall 2004, will not have this option. Any classes that are added to the new program will not count for the old programs unless approved on an individual basis by the Department Chair or his/her curriculum representative.

The classes that fit in this category are:

Current: New F04 Current: New F04: Current: New F04
    MFHD 301: HFL 223 MFHD 302: HFL 224 MFHD 321: MFHD 221
    MFHD 322: MFHD 222 MFHD 340: MFHD 240 MFHD 350: HFL 350
    MFHD 370: HFL 370 MFHD 371: HFL 371 MFHD 450: HFL 450
    MFHD 461: HFL 461 MFHD 472: HFL 472

  3. Can I switch to a new major if I want to?

YES, students may choose to switch to one of the new majors if it benefits them. Current students will need to look carefully to decide if the old majors, the new MFHD major, or the new HFL major best fits their needs. Once you switch to a new major, you cannot switch back to the old one.

  4. When will the new majors begin?

The new majors will be in effect beginning the first day of classes, Fall Semester 2004.

  5. What is the difference between the new MFHD major, the new HFL major, and the old majors?

The old MFHD major prepared students for home and family living, professional responsibilities, as well as graduate school.

The new MFHD major prepares graduates to make contributions locally (e.g. one's own family, church, and local community) and professionally (e.g. working in community and human services professions). MFHD is an excellent undergraduate preparation for those pursuing graduate school in marriage and family, marriage and family therapy, and human development research.

The new MFHD major differs from the old major in these ways: 1) some of the lower division core courses have changed; 2) the major is more structured, requiring an upper division core, upper division electives, a capstone experience, and fewer electives; 3) courses in the major are focused more on a scholarly analysis of the research in MFHD and less on practical application.

The new HFL major prepares students for successful home and family living but also enables students to develop an area of interest that leads to a home-based business or other professional endeavor. The HFL major also prepares individuals as professional and everyday home and family educators. Because of the importance of home and family living and because defending the institution of the home is becoming increasingly necessary, this major will include emphasis on both rigorous critical thinking as well as study of practical skills of everyday family living.

The new HFL general major differs from the old major in three ways: 1) there are fewer credits required; 2) there are fewer core courses; 3) students can choose either an area of emphasis or pursue a wide range of courses.

  6. What about the Family and Consumer Sciences Education major that is also offered in the School of Family Life?

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education major is designed to prepare students to be licensed by the State of Utah for teaching in secondary schools. This teaching license can be transferred to other states upon meeting their requirements. Students may also find employment in business and Cooperative Extension. There are minor changes to this major that will be in effect Fall Semester 2004. Students already in the major are not required to change; however, they may choose to change if it benefits them.

  7. I have heard that some of the classes will be changing numbers, that some courses that were MFHD courses will now be HFL courses, and that other courses may be added or eliminated. Is that true?

Yes, some courses that were MFHD courses will now be HFL courses
